Mini-12 Fact Sheet
MINI-12 FACT SHEET
There are 2 classes of Mini-12 yachts in the RVYC Fleet.
- ILLUSION - designed by British yacht designer Jo Richards in 1981
- DECEPTION - designed by Guy Tyrwhitt-Drake of RVicYC in 1984
All Mini-12s are built to a scaled down (one-fifth) version of the 12 metre
boats, e.g. CANADA 1, which was a contender in the America's Cup Race a few
years ago.
Ours is the only organized fleet in Canada although these boats are very popular
in Europe. Our enthusiasm has spread to Seattle and now Seattle Yacht Club members
have purchased 20 Deceptions, built here in Victoria by RVicYC's John Booth.
DECEPTIONS:
- 13 feet overall length with 10 foot waterline
- Larger sail area than Illusion
- First Deceptions built by Guy Tyrwhitt-Drake, Andrew McBride, Lyle Hayden,
Gerry Porter and Peter Kleyn.
ILLUSIONS:
- 12 feet overall length with 10.6 foot waterline.
- 350 - 375 pounds of ballast in keel (same for Deceptions).
- In early 1980s CANADA 1 trained in Victoria and several Illusions were used
for promotional purposes.
- In 1985 John Newton, a well-known local sailor, gifted RVicYC with 6 Illusions.
This, along with the new Deceptions was the beginning of our Mini-12 Fleet.
RVYC FLEET:
- Presently, we have 15 Illusions (10 are Club-owned) and 11 privately
-built and owned Deceptions.
- We race every Saturday from September to May. Then summer casual sailing
takes over.
- The fleet consists of all ages (oldest is 89), both male and female, of
various levels of skill and experience.
- The Mini-12 Fleet is the largest and most active fleet in the Club with
50 active sailors.
